Catch-A-Bug: Improving Hand Hygiene in PACU
In June 2014, the council wanted to improve hand hygiene in the perioperative areas. Percentages were consistently below standard causing the council to identify barriers to good hand hygiene. One common theme was the location of hand foamers; several in difficult to reach areas. The unit was already over twice the legal limit of alcohol cleansers in a perioperative area, so council member Kyla Blouin, liaison Carolyn Dietrich, and I noted areas where foamers could be removed and new ones added. The removal and addition of new foamers was marked with blue paint tape.
The process of improving hand hygiene in Pre-Op and PACU is ongoing. In August 2014, we are working to get the new foamers installed.
