PACU Competency Committee
The PACU Competency Committee lightens the competency assessment load while meeting required standards. We sought to create a successful assessment approach that meets the needs and motivates staff at the same time. Competency assessment can be fun and easy!
Goals:
Goals:
- Create a dynamic competency system that is neither cumbersome nor labor intensive.
- Identify core competencies for each job class.
- Identify ongoing competencies reflective of your organization’s quality improvement needs.
- Eliminate the overlap between competency assessment and the performance review process.
- Promote employee accountability.
- Streamline the overlap between competency assessment and your performance review process.
Timeline
In October 2013, I was selected to participate on an Educational Task Force, which later became the PACU Competency Committee. Based on the Donna Wright Model, the committee surveyed PACU staff (RNs, CNAs, and ancillary staff) to identify educational needs. Then we ranked the needs assessment based on level of importance.
In the Spring 2014, the associate nurse manager (Carolyn Dietrich) assumed the committee chair. As a committee we selected six competencies for PACU RNs and three for CNAs/ancillary staff. Each committee member chose two competencies to create and was paired with a partner. I selected the EKG Interpretation and Joint Commission Compliance Competencies. I looked at eleven methods of competency verification to take account of diverse learning styles:
In March and April 2014, I created competency tools with a variety of methods to verify competency completion. See the next page for EKG Interpretation and Joint Commission Compliance Competencies and Tools.
April through May 2014, the PACU Competency Committee met to evaluate competencies and verification tools. May 5th I presented the EKG Interpretation Competency. I made edits based on committee feedback. May 12th I presented the Joint Commission Compliance Competency and made changes to improve the tools.
June 2014, the committee presented the concepts to PACU staff.
