Code Blue Education
In March 2014, PACU had a Code Blue. For the most part, the code ran smoothly. PACU nurses, anesthesiologists, and surgeons worked well to treat the patient and transfer him to the ICU. However, perianesthesia management, Michelle Ballou and Carolyn Dietrich, identified two areas needing clarification. First, the code labs were not ordered or sent correctly. Second, there was confusion about obtaining trauma blood.
In April 2014, I discussed the Code Blue issues with Quality and Patient Safety Council members. I sought their feedback and identified education needs. In May 2014, I investigated the proper method of sending code labs and obtaining trauma blood. I reviewed policy and procedure on massive blood transfusions and code labs. I also spoke with a lab manager and blood bank manager. The principal problems were miscommunication and lack of education on policy.
At the May 19th and 22nd staff meetings, I presented a PowerPoint presentation on Code Labs and Trauma Blood. PACU nurses were reeducated on proper protocol and Code Blue issues were clarified.
